French Ishtyle!
The name of this dish is a combination of the French word for 'ham', a French article meaning "in the style of" and word of West African origin meaning rice.
The Dictionary of American Food and Drink offers this creative old wives' tale about the origin of the dish. Late one evening a traveling gentleman stopped by a New Orleans inn which had little food remaining from the evening meal. The traveler instructed the cook "Jean, __________!" or "Jean, sweep something together!" in the local dialect.

The gada is washed overnight in sheep dung steeped water and is then beaten to remove impurities – the process being repeated for two days. It is then treated with a myrobalam (resin) mixture in buffalo milk. A bamboo pen 4-6 inches in length is crafted, the bamboo deriving its colour from a reservoir that is not allowed to dry. Kasimi – the black dye is made from rusted iron pieces and sugarcane jaggery while Chavalkodi – the red/maroon dyes come from an alum powder solution. Various effects are then obtained with cowdung, seeds, plants and crushed flowers.

Kind of a farewell quiz for me as I am shifting bases to Mumbai pretty soon. The four questions put up today are from this quiz - they also take care of the backlog!

Akbar worshippers???
According to legend, the people in this place acquired their independence during the Mughal reign when the Emperor Akbar walked to the village in order to cure an ailment that he was afflicted with. After having been successfully cured he put out an edict stating that the inhabitants of the valley would never be required to pay tax.
Because of this, statues of Akbar are taken out of a temple for special processions and worshipped.
