He was European correspondent for the Chicago Tribune from 1925 to 1932, covering assignments in Europe, the Near East and India. In India he formed a close friendship with Gandhi and later on also wrote a book called "Gandhi: A Memoir".
He has also written - Love and Hatred: The Troubled Marriage of Leo and Sonya Tolstoy and The Sinking of the Bismarck but these are not why he gained world wide acclaim.
