This dish originated in Quebec, Canada, in the late 1950s with several Québécois communities including Drummondville, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and Victoriaville claiming to be its birthplace. According to an often-cited tale the dish was invented when a customer ordered French fries while waiting for his cheese curds from the Kingsey cheese factory in Kingsey Falls. The exclamatory remark- ça va faire une maudite _______ ("it will make a damn mess") by one Mr. Fernand Lachance in response to the customer's order led to the origin of the name of the dish.
